NEW DELHI: Issuing an update on the possibility of cyclonic formation over the Bay of Bengal, the IMD on Wednesday said the ‘low pressure area’ was very likely to form over north Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around May 22.
If formed, the cyclone will be named ‘Yaas’ — the name given by Oman meaning despair. “It is very likely to move north-westwards and reach West Bengal–Odisha coasts around May 25 evening,” said the IMD.
The formation will bring light to moderate rain at most places with heavy falls in Odisha, Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya from May 25. “It is very likely to increase becoming 50-60kmph gusting to 70kmph from May 23 and becoming gale wind speed during May 24-26 over central Bay of Bengal and into north Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha–West Bengal–Bangladesh coast during May 25-27,” said IMD.
