Misuse of steroids major cause behind black fungus cases: AIIMS chief | India News
NEW DELHI: AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria on Saturday said cases of Mucormycosis – commonly known as Black Fungus has suddenly increased and is causing more mortality.
During a press briefing Guleria said that 23 patients are being treated for the fungal infection at AIIMS and out of them, 20 are still Covid-19 positive.
“Many states have reported more than 500 cases of Mucormycosis. This disease can affect the face, infecting nose, orbit of eye, or brain, which can cause even vision loss. It can also spread to the lung,” he said.
“Mucormycosis spores are found in soil, air and even in food. But they’re of low virulence and usually don’t causes infection,” he added.
The AIIMS chief further warned that “misuse of steroids” during the Covid-19 treatment was a major cause of the infection.
“Chances of fungal infection increase in the patients who are diabetic, Covid positive and are taking steroids. To prevent it, we should stop the misuse of steroids,” he said.
India on Saturday reported the lowest daily cases in 18 days even as the figure significantly remains above the 3-lakh mark. In terms of Covid-19 deaths, the daily toll came below 4,000 after three days.
With 3,26,098 daily new cases, India’s total caseload now stands at 2,43,72,907.
Meanwhile, the Union health ministry has said that ten states account for 85 per cent of the total Covid-19 cases in the country.
The ministry said 11 states have over one lakh active COVID-19 cases while eight have active cases between 50,000 and one lakh.
Twenty-four states have a Covid-19 positivity rate of more than 15 per cent, it said.
